With the wide selection of weight loss programs and diet plans available today, it is difficult to know which is the best option. One of the most popular diets that has come to light recently is called intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that condenses food intake to one time-restricted period, then fasting for the rest of the day. This study looks at the long-term effects of intermittent fasting on weight loss and overall health as compared to a general calorie-restriction diet plan. The researchers found that intermittent fasting and calorie restriction are equally effective for weight loss and improving metabolic health.

This study examined trends in the incidence of infections following hip fracture surgeries in Denmark. Researchers found that the risk of postoperative infections had increased between 2005-2016. Another finding revealed that the risk of infections was substantially higher in hip fracture patients than in the age and gender-matched general population, and the risk of hospital-treated pneumonia and antibiotic prescriptions increased more over time among hip fracture patients. Given the high mortality due to infections in elderly individuals, future research should focus on improving knowledge of the risk factors and patient profiles associated with postoperative infections.

Human bodies have two metabolically different states: fasted (without food) and post-fed. The absorptive post-fed state is a metabolically active time for your body, as well as a time for immune system activity. When we eat, we trigger our immune system to produce a transient inflammatory response. For people who snack throughout the day between meals, our bodies can end up in a near constant inflammatory state. Persistent inflammation inflicts recurrent collateral damage on our body that has been linked to diseases like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. With this in mind, it might be beneficial to condense food into fewer, more satisfying meals, reducing your eating window to ten hours per day or less, and aiming to eat your last meal earlier in the day.

It is that time of year but unfortunately I feel like it is starting earlier this year – Time for Winter Running!!

I loved this article because I can relate.  Last Sunday I tried to go running outside – one of the first cold days of the year.  I was getting over a chest cold and of course I did not warm up.  I quickly realized that I was turning blue because I could not breathe.  If I followed some simple steps outlined in the article maybe I would not of looked like a Smurf running around Spring Rock Park

A slow warm up seems like such a simple idea and a warm up does not mean sitting inside Starbucks!

Breathing through my nose did help some but I was quickly panting so breathing through my nose was impossible.  I still blame that on lack of a warm up not my physical conditioning.

Wearing a scarf or face guard can help warm and humidify air prior to hitting the lungs.  I think it is cold now but soon it will be -20 and thats when the scarf will be a necessity.

Happy Running

There are many articles written on the value of exercise throughout the life cycle.  Pregnancy is no exception.  Take a look at this article that we found in Today’s Parent Magazine that will make an expectant Mom feel good about exercise.

I totally agree with the thought that “active women with uncomplicated, low-risk pregnancies can keep doing most of their fitness activities, like running or classes, with modifications, like using lighter weights. Women who weren’t active before getting pregnant should begin a gentle exercise program, like walking, and build up their fitness level slowly.”  Pregnancy will advance over 9 months and your body can adapt slowly to meet the challenges.

A pregnant woman’s body does have hormonal changes that occur.  These hormones  allow ligaments to stretch a little extra prior to delivery and can lead to a shifting of the  pelvis bones.  This back pain can be addressed with exercise to provide additional stabilization or possibly a corset to give additional external support.  This type of back pain can be addressed by a physical therapist with additional training in Women’s Health.

I have enclosed a link from an article that we read in Popular Science Magazine and a question that we are asked often.  The article looked at the research behind knuckle cracking and arthritis.  Research shows that people who crack their knuckles are not at a greater risk for osteoarthritis of the fingers.  Osteoarthritis of a joint is caused by trauma to the joint and while it sounds bad – cracking your knuckles does not generate the necessary force.  It might annoy parents but your kids can be doing worse things with their hands.

Take a look at this interesting article we ran across.  Immobilizing a broken bone is the way to allow it to heal.  Immobilization is necessary for the bone but not very good for muscles / tendons.  This article speaks of ways to keep your immobilized limb strong but still giving it time to heal at the same time.  By using eccentric muscle contraction of the non-broken limb the effected limb did not lose strength from immobilization.  This information can be useful for everyone from your 6 year old that fell off of the swings and has an arm cast on to your grandmother who has fallen and broken her leg.  Let us know what you think.
